Africa: White Nile River basin (Ref. 7393, 28714, 79609) and tributaries of Lakes Victoria (Ref. 4903, 7393, 34290), Edward (Ref. 56140, 79609) George and Albert (Ref. 7393), and Tanganyika (Ref. 7393, 45485). Present in Rusizi (Ref. 87863) and Malagarazi (Ref. 54847). Also reported from the upper Congo River basin in the upper Lualaba River (Ref. 79606), Bangweulu swamps and Luombwa River (Ref. 42135).

Obligate air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Inhabits both temporary and permanent streams and swamps (Ref. 4903). Feeds on insect larvae and crustacea (Ref. 4903, 12526). Juveniles are found in interstitial pools in papyrus. Browses on plant tissues with ostracods, dipteran larvae, beetles, mollusks and debris (Ref. 28714).
