Etymology: Parosphromenus: Greek, para in the side of + Greek, osphromenos, osphrainomai = to smell (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: F H Deissner was a local Officer of Health in Indonesia. He made a collection of fish from the island of Banka (Bangka) which he sent to Bleeker. There appears to be nothing more recorded about him. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal spines (total): 12 - 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 5 - 6; Anal spines: 12 - 13; Anal soft rays: 8 - 11. In males, the pale subdistal band on the caudal fin incomplete, interrupted posteriorly, constituting a series of oval pale spots on the fin membrane while the rays are dark pigmented.
