Etymology: Melanotaenia: Greek, melan, -anos = black + latin, taenia = stripe (Ref. 45335)longispina: Latin name combination of 'longus' and 'spinus', in reference to the long spines on dorsal and anal fins (Ref. 103156).

This species is distinguished from its congeners in the Birds Head region by the following characters: D IV-VI+I, 13-14; A I, 23-26; 37-40 lateral scales; 10 transverse scales; 19-21 anterior scales; 17-18 cheek scales; 19 gillrakers on first arch; short head length, 24.1-25.2% of SL; thin interorbital width, 7.8-8.2% of SL; long predorsal length, 50.2-51.8% of SL; long pelvic fin length, 19.6-20.4% of SL; long spine length on first dorsal fin, 13.1-15.3% of SL; moderately elongate second dorsal fin spine, 12.4-15.7% of SL; elongate anal fin spine, 10.1-11.3% of SL; short dorsal fin base, 33.4-36.5% of SL; short 2nd dorsal fin base, 20.2-22.6% of SL; dorsal fin base protruding vertically behind anal origin, between 1st and 3rd anal soft ray; absence of stripes on dorsal fins margin (Ref. 103156).

Collected from the type locality, a river which flows through secondary rainforest over gravel and sandy bottom. The habitat has turbid water and no aquatic vegetation. Maximum length based on type specimen, to be replaced with a better reference (Ref. 103156).
