Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: James Martin, Transport Officer in the Uganda Protectorate, was honoured in the cichlid’s name for “…much assistance rendered to Mr. Degen” (Edward Degen was the Swiss ornithologist who collected the type). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
