Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: James Martin, Transport Officer in the Uganda Protectorate, was honoured in the cichlid’s name for “…much assistance rendered to Mr. Degen” (Edward Degen was the Swiss ornithologist who collected the type). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Found on exposed shores and in sheltered bays, over both sand and mud but probably not close inshore (Ref. 4983). Feeds mainly on fish, also on Diptera larvae (Ref. 558).
棲息於裸露的海岸了與在掩蔽的海灣中, 在沙子和泥之上但是可能不近岸.(參考文獻 4983) 主要吃魚, 也在雙翅類幼生上.(參考文獻 558)
