Etymology: Pterygotrigla: Greek, pterigion, diminutive of pteryx = wing, fin + Greek, trigla, es = red mullet (Ref. 45335); gomoni: This species is named after Dr. Martin F. Gomon who has contributed greatly to the understanding of Australian fish systematics, particularly members of the triglid genus Lepidotrigla (Ref. 89393).

This species is distinguished by the following characters: a patch of scales on the prepectoral area; scales absent on nape, breast, and interpelvic area; short cleithral spine short (8.8-9.5% SL); interorbital narrow (6.3-7.9% SL); P112+3; no indication of hyperostosis (Ref. 91768).
