Etymology: Peckoltia: Because of Gustavo Peckolt,member of the Natural History Commission of Rondon (Ref. 45335); cavatica: Derived from Latin cavaticus meaning born or living in caves, in reference to the fact that most of the specimens were captured from holes in lateritic rocks and the fact that is likely that such holes are where this species breeds.

This species is distinguished from all other congeners, except P. braueri, by having an distal orange bands in the dorsal and caudal fins and the thin, black lines that outline the plates and bones of the head (Ref. 54521).
Facultative air-breathing in the genus (Ref. 126274); Inhabits areas with large number of lateritic rocks (Ref. 54521).
