Etymology: Monognathus: Greek, monos = one + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335); berteli: Named after the late Erik Bertelsen (alias Bertel) in recognition of his contribution to our knowledge of the Monognathidae and many other groups of deep sea fishes.
