Etymology: Monognathus: Greek, monos = one + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335)berteli: Named after the late Erik Bertelsen (alias Bertel) in recognition of his contribution to our knowledge of the Monognathidae and many other groups of deep sea fishes.

Anterior dorsal fin-ray above vertebra number 4, five vertebrae between anus and anal fin, length of pectoral fins 9.5% and posterior urostyle filament 53% of total length.
