Etymology: Cobitis: Greek, kobitis, -idos = a kind of sardine; also related with the voice Greek, kobios, Latin gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); kellei: Named after the donor of type specimens, Prof. Dr. Kelle, Diyarbakir.
Eponymy: Dr Ali Kelle was a Professor of Ichthyology at Dicle University, Diyarbakir, where he was awarded his doctorate (1978). He wrote: Taxonomic and Ecological Studies on Fishes Living in Dicle River Waters (1978). He both collected and donated the holotype. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 2 - 3; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 7; Anale stekels: 3; Anale zachte stralen: 5. Minute and rounded lateral spots (the fourth Gambetta's pigmentary zone). Head moderately long, small eyes placed in its anterior half. Mental lobes well developed. Sexual dimorphism based on well developed lamina circularis at the base of second pectoral ray in males (Ref. 41095).
Oviparous, possibly with distinct pairing during breeding similar to congeners (Ref. 205).
