Etymology: Gila: A river flowing from SW Mejico to south Arizona; eremica: Name is Latinized from the Greek, meaning "of the desert", and alludes to the severe desert conditions in the region where this new species occurs. Rainfall in much of the nortwestern Sonora averages less than 150 mm a year.

ຄີຫຼັງຂອງປາ (ຄີອ່ອນ) (ທັງໝົດ) : 7 - 8; ຄີກົ້ນຂອງປາ: 7 - 8. Differs morphometrically from G. purpurea in having on average a shallower caudal peduncle, shorter mean distance from origin of pectoral fin to origin of pelvic fin and longer upper jaw. Differs from G. ditaenia in its shorter caudal peduncle and longer post-orbital mean lengths and an average of 57 vs. 68 scales in the lateral line.
