Circumglobal: In tropical to subtropical waters; except eastern Central Pacific. Eastern Atlantic: four records between 25°N and 5°S. Western Indian Ocean: Mozambique Channel (Ref. 6619).

Adults probably bathypelagic, young from 10-200 m (Ref. 6533). Feed on copepods (Ref. 6714). Observed hovering vertically (Ref. 6619). Oviparous, with planktonic larvae (Ref. 36689).
