Etymology: Kopua: A maori word, kopua = deep, and also a locality in New Zealand; vermiculata: Name from Latin vermiculate for wavy lines or markings resembling worm form or tracks, referring to the shape of the body markings of this new species.

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: D 7; A 6; segmented caudal fin rays 15; vertebrae 35; upper procurrent caudal rays associated with both the neural spine of second preural centrum and epural; mandibular pores 3; lacrymal pores 3; nasal pore 1; predorsal length is about 60% SL. Colouration: body whitish with reddish-orange blotches, no reddish-orange stripes on cheek, belly whitish (Ref. 99639).
Collected from muddy bottom (96-100 m) together with fist-sized mudstones, probably no marine algae, so most likely they live on mudstones (Ref. .99639).
