Etymology: Pinnichthys: Name formed Latin 'pinna' (feminine; fin) and 'ichthys' (Latinized form of the Greek acronym ichthus; fish); referring to the high number of fin rays in the second dorsal fin and anal fin of all species in the genus; prolata: Name from Latin 'prolatus' for elongated; referring to the relatively elongate innermost or fifth pelvic-fin rayas compared to its congeners.
