Etymology: Nomorhamphus: Greek, nema = filament + Greek, rhamphos = bill, peak (Ref. 45335); aenigma: Name from Greek 'aenigma' for ‘riddle', referring to the riddle raised by this specie, 'why are the mandibles of most halfbeaks long?'.

This species was collected from the river that belongs to the Malili River basin. The type locality is approximately 10 m in width and 1.5 m in depth, partially shaded by forest canopy, and has mud and gravel bottom. Associated species: Nomorhamphus rex, Oreochromis niloticus, Oryzias dopingdopingensis, Osteochilus vittatus, Redigobius penango, Telmatherina sp. (Ref. 123153).
