Etymology: Apterichtus: From the Greek απτερόν (apteron), without fins, and ίχθύς (ichtus, more correctly written ichthys; masculine), fish; jeffwilliamsi: Named for Jeffrey T. Williams (National Museum of Natural History, USNM).

Short description

Vértebra: 138 - 142. This species is distinguished by the following by the following characters: tail 1.7-1.8, head 13-16, and body depth 65-73 in total length; preopercular pores 4, supratemporal canal with 5-9 pores; teeth conical, uniserial on jaws and vomer; and with a single vomerine tooth; anterior nostril non-tubular, a hole; snout is sharp, slope approximately 30° relative to underside;
body colouration pinkish white, with numerous brown to orange spots that are less than eye diameter; MVF 58-140, total vertebrae 138-142 (Ref. 101270).
Captured over a rippled sand bottom. The largest female specimen (30.5 cm TL) was with ripened eggs, 0.7-0.9 mm in diameter (Ref. 101270).
