Etymology: Pinnichthys: Name formed Latin 'pinna' (feminine; fin) and 'ichthys' (Latinized form of the Greek acronym ichthus; fish); referring to the high number of fin rays in the second dorsal fin and anal fin of all species in the genusbilix: Name from Latin 'bilix' meaning - with a double thread; referring to the two elongated, threadlike dorsal-fin spines.

This robust, large-eyed species is distinguished by the following characters: D2 I,11; A 11-12; pectoral-fin rays 19-20; body extensively scaled, with mid-lateral scales extending from just behind pectoral-fin axil to caudal-fin base; most scales are weakly ctenoid; cycloid scales on belly, in first row along dorsal- and anal-fin bases, and in anteriormost lateral row; well developed fifth pelvic-fin ray and is slightly greater in length than second pelvic-fin ray; relatively deep body; first and second dorsal-fin spines are greatly elongated, especially in females; first spine reaching posterior end of second dorsal-fin base in female holotype; first two anal-fin pterygiophores are inserted anterior to first haemal spine (Ref. 94726).
