Etymology: Trichomycterus: Greek, thrix = hair + Greek, mykter, -eros = nose (Ref. 45335); pirabitira: The specific name Pirabitira, from the Tupi, is a contraction of pira (fish), and ybytyra (mountain).

Inhabits streams with clear water and muddy substrate comprising of submerged litter (Ref. 92859).
