Etymology: Aetheliparis: Greek, aethes-, strange, denoting the remarkable morphology of the head and pectoral girdle of the species of the genus, and liparis, the root of the family name; taurocanis: Name from Latin 'taurus' meaning bull, and 'canis' for dog; referring to the pugnacious appearance of the fish resulting from its vertical mouth and prominent lower jaw.
