Distinguished from congeners by having the following unique characters: 24-28 gill rakers; snout blunt; and back arched. Additional characters useful for identification, but not unique, include 10-12 scale rows between dorsal fin origin and lateral line, and 8-9 between anal fin origin and lateral line (Ref. 59043).
Inhabits close to bottom of lakes. Feeds on snails, worms and insects. Spawns in late November in very shallow water, over stones close to surf zone (Ref. 59043).
