Etymology: Pseudochromis: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); alticaudex: Name from Latin altus for high and caudex for stem or trunk, referring to the relatively high circumpeduncular scale count compared with similar species.

This species distinguished by the following characters: 24-25 (usually 24) segmented dorsal-fin rays; 12-13 (usually 13) segmented anal fin rays; 18-25 anterior lateral line scales; 16-20 (usually 20) circumpeduncular scales; relatively stout and pungent anal-fin spines, the second much stouter than the third; color in alcohol consisting of pale central spots on scales of flanks behind pectoral fin base and dark central spots on breast scales (Ref. 81967).
Known from coral reefs in harbours and near mangrove areas (Ref. 81967).
