Etymology: Australoheros: From the Latin word 'australis' meaning southern, and the name Heros, after the nominotypic genus of the Heroini tribe. Tribemuriae: Named 'muriae' in allusion to the river basin where the new species was collected.
Eponymy: This is a toponym referring to the Rio Muriaé basin in southeastern Brazil where the cichlid was discovered. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Distinguished from other congeners by the combination of the following characters: caudal vertebrae 12; absence of mark on side of head; dorsal-fin spines 15; dorsal-fin rays 11-12; anal-fin rays 9-10; pectoral-fin rays 14-15; 24-25 proximal radials on dorsal-fin base; caudal peduncle length 10.2-11.9% SL: scales in longitudinal row 27-29; wide ectopterygoid; arms of epibranchial 2 with two long tubular processes; arm of epibranchial 1 long; arms of vertical trunk bar 7 with the same width; absence of depression on head; and snout not robust (Ref. 79631).
