This species is characterized by having D XIII-XIV,10-11 (usually XIII,11); A II,11; pectoral rays 16-17 (usually 17); 3 spiniform caudal rays; 14-15 (usually 14) tubed lateral line scales ; gill rakers 7-8 + 21-22 (total, 28-29); body depth 1.79-2.00 in SL; dorsally olive-brown, shading to pale iridescent blue-green ventrally; top of head and tip of chin are blackish; spinous dorsal fin and scaled basal part of soft dorsal fin are yellowish grey, the rest of soft dorsal fin hyaline with pale yellow rays; anal fin yellowish with scaled basal part slightly dusky brownish; lobes of caudal fin are broadly dusky yellow, the tips blackish, posterocentral half of fin hyaline; pelvic and pectoral fins are pale yellowish; alcohol preserved are nearly uniform brown (Ref. 78145).
Collected from a steep drop-off near shore (Ref. 54758). Life history characteristics for the family specify that this group is oviparous, with distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
