Etymology: Puntius: Lantin, punctum = point, the point of the sword (Ref. 45335); pugio: The specific name is a Latin for a dagger. This species is named for its prominent, long, sharp, spine-like last unbranched dorsal fin ray, which in contrast to species with similar color pattern lacks serrae along the posterior borders.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 11 - 12; Anal soft rays: 8. Differs from all congeners except Puntius sophore, Puntius chola, Puntius brevis, and Puntius burmanicus by having frontoparietal fontanel, and from those species by presence of dark band encircling caudal peduncle. Barbels absent, lateral line complete, last unbranched dorsal fin ray compact except distally, and serrae absent (Ref. 75627).
