Etymology: Jupiaba: An indigenous word from Brazil, in the region where Angela (Ichthyologist) was born and discovered several new fishes. (Personal communication from Barry Chernoff, Curator Fishes/Museum of Chicago; poekotero: Specific name derived from 'poekotero' (poe, waterfall; kotero, warder), the common name of the species among the Tuyuka people, which means the warder of the waterfalls.

Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 11; Radios blandos anales: 24 - 28; Vértebra: 35. Distinguished from its congeners by the presence of an unpigmented, horizontally-oriented, roughly oval area on the proximal portion of the caudal-fin lobes, bordered posteriorly by dark pigmentation (Ref. 54762).
Body shape (shape guide): short and / or deep.
Collected exclusively by seining beaches in pools immediately downstream of waterfalls or rapids, but not in the rapids themselves (Ref. 54762). Apparently avoids small forest streams (Ref. 54762). Feeds on filamentous algae, fragments of Podostemaceae, terrestrial and aquatic Hemipterans, adults and larvae of Trichopterans and odonate nymphs (Ref. 54762).
