Etymology: Pseudobarbus: Greek, pseudes = false + Latin, barbus = barbel (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: This is not an eponym but a toponym as, despite the spelling of the vernacular name, this species is named after the Burg River. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Ecology
Freshwater; benthopelagic. Subtropical; 31°S - 33°S
Africa: Occurs in the Berg River system and Verlorenvlei Rivers, southwest Cape. Probably extinct in the Eerste River, Cape Province, South Africa (Ref. 2801). Decline caused by habitat deterioration and impact of introduced predatory species (Ref. 3881). Western Black Sea basin: from Kamchiya (Bulgaria) to Düzdere drainages (Turkey) (Ref. 59043).
Length at first maturity / Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?, range 6 - ? cm
Max length : 12.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 7248)
Usually found near vegetation except when the water is turbid. It can tolerate extreme conditions and survive in various habitats from small streams to large impoundments. Feeding habits varied in different seasons: for small fish benthic feeding during spring and midwater feeding during summer; larger fish fed on corixid bugs during summer but switched to chironomid larvae and zooplankton in winter. Capable of jumping when ascending rapids (Ref. 6465).
