Etymology: Lampanyctus: Greek, lampas, -ados = torch + Greek, nykte = night (Ref. 45335); crypticus: From the Latin word for obscure or hidden, in reference to the unrecognized existence and relationships of this species (Ref. 36121).

Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 0; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 12 - 15; Taggstrålar i analfenan: 0; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 15 - 19; Ryggkotor: 33 - 36. 10-13 AO photophores; 7.5-8 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 32-34 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121). Pectoral fin rays pointing directly downward in larger specimens; rays progressively thicker, stiffer, and relatively shorter in larger specimens but remnants always visible externally, apparently not covered with skin even in specimens 9-10 cm SL in length (Ref. 36121).
