Etymology: Parenchelyurus: Greek, Greek, para in the side of + Greek, enchelys, -yos = eel + Greek, oura = tail (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Lieutenant A J Hepburn was a naval executive officer who was commanding aboard the US Bureau of Fisheries steamer ‘Albatross’. He had previously joined the ‘Pensacola’ (1904). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 11 - 12; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 18 - 20; Anale stekels: 2; Anale zachte stralen: 20 - 23. Black with white specks (Ref. 37816).
Adults occur in the intertidal zone, where they hide beneath rocks (Ref. 637 and 559). Oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205), and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal (Ref. 94114). Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow, coastal waters (Ref. 94114).
