Etymology: Tanichthys: Named for Mr Tan Kam Fei, the famous Scout of Kwangtung; for his interest in ichthyology and encouraging the young scouts toward the study of naturemicagemmae: Names with reference to its sparkling colour pattern and small size, from the Latin verb micare (sparkle) and the Latin substantive gemma (gem). Noun in apposition.
Eponymy: Tan Kam Fei was a Chinese boy-scout leader who discovered and collected the first specimens of the minnows (1932) and brought them to the attention of the author. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 8; Raggi anali molli: 11. Head and body below lateral midline whitish with many small dark grey spots (versus dark reddish brown); one black and white whitish longitudinal stripe of about same width (width of black stripe 0.9-1.8 times width of whitish stripe versus 0.3-0.6); distance from dorsal-fin origin to upper margin of whitish stripe about equal to distance from anal-fin origin to lower margin of black stripe (upper distance 0.9-1.2 times lower distance versus 1.8-2.7).
