Diagnosis: more slender and elongate than congenerics, with smaller head, eyes and mouth; ripe males with yellow-white dorsal "blaze" (Ref. 55949).

体色 身体银色的, countershaded; 活的雌性与非繁殖期的雄性时常展现一个明亮的金属紫色的光辉; 雄性在繁殖方面，服装是深灰色的到黑色的, 具有一个鲜黄色的-白色的背部火焰; 成熟雄性深灰色的背面, 银灰色在侧面上与腹侧灰白的; 背鳍灰色的-白色或黃色, 有時只有在鰭的末梢部部份上, 下面的部份是深灰色或黑色的; 背部的火焰白色或黃色, 有時佈滿黑色的斑點, 從吻部到背鰭延伸, 而且有時全部沿著身體上半部表面到尾梗; 尾鰭灰色的, 有時有淡黃色的上、下邊緣; 腹鰭與臀鰭灰色的, 白色的或黃色; 在臀鰭上的 1-2 大又灰白的 eggspots.(參考文獻 55949)
Found inshore and offshore, on reefs and over the shelf; abundant over the anoxic zone; female mouthbrooder (Ref. 55949). Zooplanktivorous; probably the most abundant species in Lake Malawi (Ref. 94786).
