Etymology: Monognathus: Greek, monos = one + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335); ozawai: Named for Takakazu Ozawa who allowed the authors to describe the only Japanese specimen of this rare genus.

পৃষ্ঠীয় নরম পাখনা দন্ড (মোট ) : 96; পায়ূর নরম পাখনা্তুন্ড: 66. M. ozawai differs from the other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: head short, snout blunt and short, skull length 5.5% TL, rostral fang with dorsal profile slightly convex forming an almost straight line with frontal profile of skull, dorsal fin origin above myomere number 5, anal fin origin below dorsal fin ray number 40 and pectoral fin about 1% TL.
Pelagic, caught in an open ring trawl (Ref. 34506).
