Live specimen red with 5 longitudinal rows of pale pink blotches, some connecting vertically to form irregular bands. Red fins, tips of soft rays of median fins hyaline. Operculum with an ocellated reddish black spot larger than pupil. One incomplete lateral line. Longitudinal scale series 43. No dermal flap or small tentacle dorsally on eye. The long tubular anterior nostril when laid back reaches posterior nostril. Snout length 5.25 in head; caudal peduncle depth 3.15 in head; very short caudal-peduncle, 6.9 in head; pectoral fins 3.3 in SL (Ref. 27020).
