Etymology: Bunocephalus: Greek, byneo = to fill up, to swell + Greek, kephale = head (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Rodolpho Lara Campos sponsored the expedition that collected the holotype. He had a boat especially built for the expedition to Rio Piracicaba (1928). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
