Épines dorsales (Total) : 10 - 11; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 15 - 17; Épines anales: 2; Rayons mous anaux: 13 - 14. Black or orange with two vertical black-edged white bands, one behind the eye and one above the after. Black and orange color morphs believed to be dependent on which species of sea anemone the fish is associated with.

Adults inhabit lagoons and outer reef slopes. Feed primarily on planktonic copepods, a variety of algae, echiuroids, and sipunculoids. Diurnal species (Ref. 113699). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205). Associated with the anemones: Entacmaea quadricolor, Heteractis aurora, Heteractis crispa, and Stichodactyla mertensii (Ref. 5911). Have been reared in captivity (Ref. 35420).
