Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); duryi: Named after Mr. Charles Dury, the collector of the original types (Ref. 10294).
Eponymy: Charles Dury was an amateur entomologist. The etymology states: “Mr. Charles Dury, recently, while collecting insects in East Tennessee, collected a small lot of fishes, consisting of five species, two of which seem to be new to science.” (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
