Etymology: Bujurquina: A name created by Kullander, taken from a native Peruvian word for these cichlids, "bujurqui" or "bufurque"; 1983-1986; cordemadi: Named after the Corporación Departamental de Desarrollo de Madre de Dios, which facilitated the collection that led to its discovery.
Eponymy: The name is based on an acronym, referring to the Corporación Departamental de Desarrollo de Madre de Dios, which “…greatly facilitated the collecting around Puerto Maldonado in 1983 that led to the discovery of this species.” (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
