This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: differs from P. robinsoni in no having a symphyseal knob on the lower jaw (vs. distinct knob in P. robinsoni), with 1 preocular spine (vs. 2), and with 2 robust lachrymal spines (vs. 1); differs from P. multisquamata in having 6-8 supraocular spines (vs. 9-11 in P. multisquamata); D1 IX (rarely VIII) (vs.D1 X); pored lateral-line scales 34-39 (vs. 40-44) (Ref. 117904).
