Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); lynceum: Derived from Lynceus, one of Jason's argonauts (Greek mythology), to whom was attributed remarkable vision (Ref. 10294).

North America: in tributaries of the Mississippi River on the Former Mississippi Embayment in western Kentucky, western Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana in the USA. Also in the Gulf coast drainages from Escatawpa River in Alabama to the Mississippi River in Louisiana.
