Etymology: Aphyosemion: Greek, aphye, -es, sardine, anchovy + Greek, semeion = mark, signal (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Otto Hofmann is an Austrian aquarist. He discovered the species while collecting with Eduard Pürzl in southern Gabon. He also had collected earlier in Cameroon (1977) and later did so with Radda in DR Congo (1982). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
