Etymology: Sphyraena: Greek, sphyraina, -es = the name of a fish (Ref. 45335); intermedia: The name 'intermedia' comes from the intermediate anatomic characters of the new species with S. sphyraena and S. viridensis (in particular the otoliths and intestinal villi).

Short description

Collected using gill nets, trawl nets, seining and 'lampara' engine. Stomach contents include remains of cephalopods, Sardina pilchardus or Sardinella aurita, a young Sphyraena sphyraena, and fluid materials. Some were infected in the stomach and gonads by the anisakid nematode Anisakis sp. (Ref. 82428).
