Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits small rivers that are tannin stained, acidic, very soft and deficient of dissolved substances, with compacted clay/sand bottoms, overlain with organic detritus. Also found in large rivers with a markedly seasonal hydrological regime, substantial flood plains and water ranges from clear to turbid water, but are not tannin-stained, are less acidic, harder and carry a greater concentrations of dissolved minerals (Ref. 57724). Feeds on terrestrial and aquatic insects and preyed upon mostly by fish-eating birds and dragonfly nymphs (Ref. 57724).
