Etymology: Astyanax: The name of Astyanax, Hector´s son in the Greek mythology (Ref. 45335); totae: Named from Tota, nickname of Adelinyr Azevedo de Moura Cordeira, in recognition of her contribution to MHNCI fish collection.

Distinguished from most species of Astyanax by the vertically elongated humeral spot, slightly expanded above the lateral line to posterodorsal margin of opercle, followed by a midlateral dark stripe expanded from the humeral region to the median caudal-fin rays, maxilla with 2-5 teeth (usually 3) and anal fin with 15-18 branched rays (Ref. 56783).
Found in headwater stream with clear water, light to moderate water current and bottom consisting of stones, sand and moderate amount of vegetal debris (Ref. 56783). Feeds most frequently on microcrustaceans (Cladocera and Copepoda), insect larvae (Chironomidae), adult insects and plant fragments (Ref. 56783).
