Dorsal spines (total): 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 10; Vertebrae: 27. Body densely covered with modified scales which form spinous points; depth greater than 1/3 SL.. Lachrymal with 2 strong sharp spines, the first notably curved. Second infraorbital bone with 1 or 2 spines, and an obscure small circular lateral line pore. Uppermost preopercular lateral-line pores with no finger-like cirri. Mouth very strongly upturned, nearly vertical. Interorbit with prominent ridges, divergent anteriorly, convergent over middle of interorbit, divergent posteriorly (Ref. 35984, 39602).
