Having a forward directed spine in front of dorsal fin origin; anal fin with 5 1/2 branched rays; post-labial groove interrupted in middle; conspicuous crescent shaped marks on each scale and large black blotch on dorsal fin of juveniles; black margin on dorsal fin of adults, often also on caudal and anal fins (Ref. 43281).
