Etymology: Tanichthys: Named for Mr Tan Kam Fei, the famous Scout of Kwangtung; for his interest in ichthyology and encouraging the young scouts toward the study of nature.
Eponymy: Tan Kam Fei was a Chinese boy-scout leader who discovered and collected the first specimens of the minnows (1932) and brought them to the attention of the author. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species is distinguished from T. albonubes by having more branched anal-fin rays (-10, 9 in mode (vs. 8 in mode), more branched dorsal-fin rays 7 in mode (vs. 6 in mode), and a reddish-orange dorsal-fin margin (vs. white); differs from T. albiventris by having more branched dorsal-fin rays 7 in mode (vs. 6 in mode), and a golden anal-fin margin (vs. white); differs from T. kuehnei and from T. micagemmae by having a black lateral stripe located on the dorsal half of the flank (vs. on middle of the flank), and a reddish-orange dorsal-fin margin (vs. white); differs from T. thacbaensis by the origin of the anal fin anterior to the base of the last dorsal-fin ray (vs. posterior), and mouth superior (vs. terminal) (Ref. 125918).
