Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics
Dorsal spines (total): 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 7; Vertebrae: 26. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: D X,15 the last branched to base counted as one; pectoral fin rays 11-12; vertebrae 10 + 16; lateral line complete with 29-30 tubed scales; gill rakers 7-8 + 12-13; the ventral margin of preopercle with 3 antrorse spines; snout is moderately long, 3.0-3.2 in HL, 12.3-14.2 % SL. Colouration overall is red with two indistinct black spots along the base of the dorsal fin, translucent yellow dorsal and anal-fin membranes (Ref. 122130).
Collected (with hand nets) and have been observed in highly complex habitats on walls and ledges within mesophotic ecosystems, suggesting that the species does not inhabit shallow coral reefs (Ref. 122130).
