Predominantly found in open offshore waters, sometimes found close to the shore in sandy areas (Ref. 4983). As suggested by its long and coiled intestines, H. nigripinnis is a vegetarian. It feeds mainly on suspended phytoplankton. Like most Haplochromis species, it is an opportunistic feeder (Ref. 558).
