Africa: middle Congo River basin in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo-Brazzaville and Cameroon (Ref. 78218), Sanaga, Nyong and Woleu/Ntem in Cameroon and Ivindo and Nyanga in Gabon (Ref. 81644). Also reported from the Kienke (= Kribi) in Cameroon (Ref. 51193).

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 70 - 80; Anal soft rays: 60 - 70. Diagnosis: eyes with free orbital rim; dorsal and anal fins long, 62-72% SL (mean 68) and 45-61% SL (mean 55), respectively, but not fused to caudal fin; skull large and broad, width 71-86% (mean 78) skull length; external mandibular barbel more than half of skull length (Ref. 81644).
Remains of decayed plants and insects have been found in the stomach of a female specimen from central Congo (Ref. 78218).
