Etymology: Australoheros: From the Latin word 'australis' meaning southern, and the name Heros, after the nominotypic genus of the Heroini tribe.

Dorsal spines (total): 15 - 17; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7 - 9; Anal spines: 5 - 6; Anal soft rays: 6 - 7; Vertebrae: 26. Differs from all species of the genus by the following combination of characters: 5-6 anal-fin spines; 6-7 branched anal-fin rays; caudal peduncle length 8.9-11.8% of SL; lips not thickened; in preserved specimens lateral band formed by two series of scales, each scale bears a dark spot in the centrum, between both scales there is a light narrow area; dorsal, anal and caudal fins, and opercle without dark spots (Ref. 57794).
