Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible.

Western Pacific: from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Palau; south to Australia (Great Barrier Reef and NSW); east to Fiji, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Tonga, and the Samoan Islands.

This species has a cephalic sensory-canal pore system lacking IT and POP pores; branched pectoral-fin rays branched; dorsal/anal-fin formula 9/8; with the fifth pelvic-fin ray 70% of the fourth ray (Ref. 107299).
Has been collected from depths of 0 to 31 m (Ref. 1602). Found in coastal reefs (Ref 90102).
